Welcome to PEKIN, Illinois

Marigold Capital of the World

A Little History

The City of Pekin (pop. 34,094) is located in the west central portion of Illinois, along the eastern bank of the Illinois River. The Pekin area is rich in both agricultural and industrial heritage. Regional topography includes river bluffs, rolling hills, mature wooded areas and several man-made lakes.

Robert De La Salle, along with a fleet of canoes and 33 men, is believed to be one of the first European explorers to visit the area. In 1680 his crew constructed a winter refuge in what is now the southeast quarter of Section One of Pekin Township.

Although travelers and Native Americans frequented the area, it was not until the summer of 1824 that Jonathon Tharp built a small log cabin on the high east bank of the Illinois River, and encouraged his father, friends and other family members to follow him.

The Pekin area has far too many attractions, events, organizations, and businesses to list on this page. Use the menu to find more pages about the community, our schools, parks, library, attractions, events, businesses, and of course, the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce.
